Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay lived with her aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to be creative and instilled by art. She worked as a night nurse, allowing her aunt to have the time she needed in her working day to pursue her passion for the arts, literature and theater. DuVernay liked the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay discovered that art can be powerful in promoting activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was knowledgeable about society and taught her how to utilize the arts to find a way to express her feelings. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences was the Civil Rights marches that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay's time in Selma, Alabama led her later on to write a movie about The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles when she graduated, where she earned qualifications in English and African American Studies. While she was in school, DuVernay was interested in creating television journalism. DuVernay began as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned duty of looking after the house and examining the trash of one of members of the juries. Her duties left her unhappy with journalism, and she decided to switch careers into the publicity industry. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in a small production studio right after graduating from college. After this, she founded her own public relations company that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company also launched a variety of promotion and lifestyle networks, such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
